Magnetic therapy is the latest mode of treatment that has managed to raise many brows on the results it claims. It is an alternative medicine practice which makes use of static magnetic fields and by subjecting them to magneto static fields beneficial effects on health have been observed. It is not an arbitrary practice and has both physical and biological factors to back its claims. Some objections were raised earlier regarding the adverse effects this method could have on blood flow as hemoglobin, the blood protein that carries oxygen is extremely diamagnetic, that is, when subjected to magnetic fields, it would be weakly repelled b the same. But recent studies have shown that the magnetic fields used in this mode of treatment are many orders weak than the minimum threshold hemoglobin requires being repelled.
The application of magnetic fields is achieved by attaching permanent magnets to the body. Based upon different orientations of the magnet, different kinds of health effects are achieved. The various modes of applying the permanent magnetic field are magnetic bracelets and different forms of jewellery. They could also be applied by magnetic straps for various parts of the body like wrists, knees, back or ankles, the inner side of the shoe sole, magnetic blankets or even creams that are magnetic in nature.
It is said that attaching these magnets increases the blood flow in the tissues that lie underneath our skin. It is also claimed that this therapy helps to increase the average life expectancy of the humans and also that it has been successful in treating cancer. All such claims have not yet been backed by any kind of authentic research. Even though there have been claims that such therapy alleviates pain and provides a relief to the patient, clinical research has not been promising enough on this front. The only possible exceptions where such modes of therapy have been found to be effective are in osteoarthritis. But there is a host of contradictions in the findings of different studies. So by far, no actual proof exists for the efficacy of such treatments. However, most of the researchers agreed on one point. Such magnetic straps were found to be effective in relieving menstrual pain greatly.
The main point of concern regarding methods of alternate therapies is the extent to which they are safe. By far, no drastic effects have been reported but there could be certain risks especially when there is some delay in diagnosis or the treatment. Generally, the advertising of such alternative medications has been curbed by applying legal limitations in most of the countries but not all countries have such rules to protect the rights of the consumers. Since this method is not completely scientific, it is generally advised in the best interest of the patient that before deciding on any of these therapies, consult your physician. Do not blindly follow hearsay or any hollow claims of people who guarantee cent per cent efficacy of the magnetic therapy and jewellery.
